Get To Know Us

Your credit union is a federally insured cooperative financial institution, owned by its members. Unlike a bank or savings and loan association, a credit union is not for profit and dedicated only to serving its members who share a common bond. Credit Union members pool their money to make their collective savings available for low cost loans to each other.

Watch this short video to learn why it’s so wise
to be a credit union member!

Since credit unions are nonprofit, earnings are distributed to members either in the form of better rates on savings or rebates on loans, or are invested in new or improved services for the members. Once you deposit money in the credit union, you become a member and shareholder. You can then vote for the credit union’s board of directors. Officers and directors are chosen from the membership and serve on a voluntary basis.

UNI Credit Union was established in 1955 and has been providing services to the employees, faculty, alumni and students of the University of Northern Iowa along with the employees and faculty of the Cedar Falls School District. In 2012 Midwest Utilities Credit Union consisting of the employees, retirees, and families of MidAmerican Energy along with the employees of Greco Financial and Nagle Signs merged in with UNI Credit Union. Our current member exceeds 2,700.

To our members, we promise:

  • We are here to serve you and only you.
  • You are never an “account number” at the Credit Union, but a member or friend
  • A person will answer the phone when you call and you will not encounter long lines in our lobby
  • We will always take pride in giving you the highest quality personal service that is fast and accurate

As a member of UNI Credit Union, all funds are Federally insured by the National Credit Union Administration to at least $250,000. If you need insurance for amounts above $250k, please contact us.

Important Information About Procedures for Opening a New Account:

To help the government fight the funding of terrorism and money laundering activities, Federal law requires all financial institutions to obtain, verify, and record information that identifies each person who opens an account.

What this means to you: when you open an account, we will ask for your name, date of birth (for individuals), and other information that will allow us to identify you or the organization you represent. We may also ask to see your driver’s license or other identifying documents. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your cooperation.
